Schoolyard Phenology

A nature observation program for teachers and their students. Classes make regular observations throughout the school year and share their observations with scientists.

Why Schoolyard Phenology?

Every child deserves the opportunity to be fully immersed in the scientific process. Indiana Phenology provides a consortium of schools with free curriculum, funding assistance, and ongoing support each year.

What Will My Students Do and Learn?

Students regularly monitor chosen plants and animals on school grounds. They answer a series of yes-or-no questions about what they saw. Students can also analyze the data they collect and share their findings at the end-of-year student research forum.

Why Should My Class Participate?

Students get hands-on experience with real science! They follow established observation protocols, collect real data, and solve problems in the field.

Kids can make a difference! Student data helps us understand how local environments are changing. Their data becomes part of a national database used by ecologists, climate scientists, and conservation managers to protect and preserve our world.

How Are My Observations Used?
