1. Join Nature's Notebook

Sign up on your computer, Apple device, or Android device in less than five minutes. Be sure to join Indiana Phenology when you create your account.

2. Select Your Site

Choose a site where you will observe. Your backyard, a green space near your work, or a nearby park are great options! Watch the training video on YouTube to learn more.

3. Select Your Species

Choose from over 600 species of plants and animals to observe in Indiana!

4. Register Your Site and Species

Log in to your Nature's Notebook account, then add a new site to your observation deck. You can use the online mapping tool to locate and describe your site(s) in Nature’s Notebook.

5. Make Observations

Use Nature’s Notebook to enter data online or record your observations using paper datasheets and enter the data using a computer.

Tips to Help You Identify Species

Use a field guide. If you don't have one at home, check your local library.

Use an online plant ID tool. Not sure where to find one? Use a search engine or download a free mobile app like Seek.
