Winter Buds - Middle and High School

This activity is split into three parts. Part one is outdoor collection and observation of buds followed by discussion and generalization of bud adaptations. Part two is drawing a diagram of a bud based on what students observe. It encourages detailed observation, diversifies reporting skills, and helps students create their own models. Part three (Spinach Leaf Challenge) is engineering a cloth “bud” to protect a spinach leaf, based upon observations in parts one and two.
