Averages Last Year
The average temperatures during February for Indianapolis were almost exactly as predicted in the graphic to the left in the beginning of the month, but gradually getting colder as the month progressed. Comparing the first two weeks of February in 2022:
Feb. 1 - a high of 59 and a low of 30.
Feb. 15 - a high of 29 and a low of 10.
What Can We Expect?
Based on the graphic and last year's temps we can expect February to start cold and gradually get warmer. Last year, the curve turned upward near March so we can expect the same to happen this year. Feb. 15 of last year was unseasonably cold compared to the rest of the month, so it can be considered an outlier in this instance.

Weather + Phenology: How Do They Relate?
The temperature impacts the phenology cycle of plants especially during these critical season changes. At this time in Indiana, the temp is getting low enough to cause leaves to start changing color and fall off their trees. If there is a drastic change in the typical expected temp for this month or next, it could lead to this process happening sooner than normal, or later than normal. This in turn affects the life cycle timing for many insects and animals who use these plants as a food source.
