August 2024 - Phenohappenings as reported by Nature's Notebook Observers

During August of 2024, 19 observers made a total of 5,552 observations of the phenology of plants and animals in Indiana using Nature's Notebook! A total of 55 site visits were made at 22 different sites across 14 counties. We had reports coming in on 26 of the 31 days of August.


Here's a sampling of what was reported.

Flower

Here are the top 10 plants reported to have flower buds or open flowers of the 189 plant species observed during August 2024. Not all of them are yellow!

Eastern purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)

Reported to be flowering in Delaware, Hamilton, Jackson, Marion, Monroe, and Morgan Counties.

Blackeyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)

Reported to be flowering in Hamilton, Hancock, Johnson, Marion, and Monroe Counties.

Reported to be flowering in Hancock, and Marion Counties.

Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

Reported to be flowering in Delaware, Monroe, and Morgan Counties.

Reported to be flowering in Fulton, and Marion Counties.

Reported to be flowering in Marion County.

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis)

Reported to be flowering in Marion County.

Reported to be flowering in Marion County.

Reported to be flowering in Marion, and Monroe Counties.

Colored Leaves

Reported to have some colored leaves in Daviess, Fulton, Marion, and Morgan Counties.

Reported to have some colored leaves in Marion, and Morgan Counties.

Reported to have some colored leaves in Marion County.

Reported to have some colored leaves in Marion County.

Common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)

Reported to have some colored leaves in Monroe County.

Smooth sumac (Rhus glabra)

Reported to have some colored leaves in Delaware, and Marion Counties.

If your county is not listed, that doesn't necessarily mean a species was not flowering, or fruiting, or undergoing a color change. It might just mean we don't have any reports at all for that species in your county. You can help us fill the gaps by becoming an Indiana Backyard Observer.
